Why Filipinos must not elect Duterte or Binay – two men who may bring ruin to a country struggling to emerge from a culture of political lawlessness, graft, and corruption

TheCandidates-800

The past six years saw the Philippines recuperating from decades of failed leadership, mismanagement, and plundering. Public officials high and low have been charged with graft, corruption, and plunder – and dozens upon dozens of them have been removed and perpetually disqualified from public office, while many more face similar fates.

This year – on May 9 – the country will elect a new president who will head government for the next six years. Whether the Philippines continues to remake itself and totally eliminate the virus that is both a culture of corruption and abuse of office depends on who gets elected from among the five presidential aspirants. The aspirants are Grace Poe, Mar Roxas, Rodrigo Duterte, Jejomar Binay, and Miriam Santiago. Those who have a chance of winning are Poe and Roxas, and, unfortunately, Duterte and Binay.

Duterte and Binay are strong contenders because a lot of people admire politicians that act like bullies who neither fear the law nor respect any reason, as well as politicians that behave like the legendary Robin Hood – who steal from the rich to give to the poor.

Many Filipinos believe that Duterte (a poor imitator of the late Manila Mayor Arsenio H. Lacson) is a Rambo-type hero who takes the law into his own hands to kill the bad guys and save the good guys, all the while forgetting that this type of personality may get out of hand and eventually serve no one but himself. Apparently, Duterte is an egomaniac who believes himself to be above the law. He is that person whose delusions of personal greatness will eventually bloat and then aim to become a dictator.

Many Filipinos believe that Binay rose out of poverty by milking the rich – and therefore needs to be honored for such an accomplishment. These folk don’t realize that Binay milked them as well, and whatever he passed on to them is peanuts compared to what he kept for himself. Robin Hood never got rich.

The Philippines is at the crossroads. If the people elect Duterte or Binay, they set the country back a decade or two in its effort to reform. If the people elect Poe or Roxas – or even long-shot Santiago – they move the country forward and well on the road to political, social, and cultural renaissance.

They are part of a widespread sick propaganda campaign to stir up anarchy in the country.

Hahaha…. and Binay ay ewan. We need a leader na may political will. Na handang i sacrifice ang sarili para sa bayan. Kaya matakot na ang dapat matakot. If you are a law abiding citizen wala kang dapat katakutan. Pero kong criminal ka. Mag tago ka na sa saya ng nanay mo….

Even before i knew about Duterte, I prayed so hard to God na bigyan nang pagkakataon ang Pinas.

I do not agree with your intelligent analysis about my former Mayor of Davao Rodrigo Duterte. I assumed you had verified the information you heard or read about Duterte. Davao used to be a town with so much killings and robberies everywhere. I remembered every morning walking about 2 miles to school worrisome that I might be robbed or mugged. I was not kidding it is true. I had been robbed and mugged many times in the streets of C. M. Recto, Ponciano, Bolton and Bankerohan. We used to be scared getting home late because of rampant crimes in our town. That was before the time of Duterte. When he became the mayor of Davao City, he cleaned our streets from hoodlums. He served with sincerity and compassion to the poor people of Davao. If he killed the criminals, that was during confrontation or at a crossfire. He sent a clear message that lawlessness has no place in his town. It worked. That is why Davao is better than most towns of our country. It was because of Duterte’s strong hand against criminals and compassion for Davawenyos. It is not fair for you to judge Duterte because of what those hypocrites accused him of. He served the people of Davao well with sincere public service. He is not corrupt. He is down to earth. He might say bad word but it was just out of frustration from the rotten system of our country. Nobody in the present presidential candidates who has the guts and political will to move our country forward. ROXAS- incompetent. POE-inexperience. BINAY-corrupt. SANTIAGO- I love her but I like Duterte better. This election is not about maybe he/she is better. We need proven leadership. Duterte is a proven leader. He was an excellent mayor of Davao and his track record will bring our country to progress. His platform to curb criminality, drugs and corruption is a perfect recipe to progress. Why Duterte? Because he had done it before.

    • I could agree with you, Troy – but the point is this: history shows that leaders who take matters into their own hands in disregard for the law end up being bad for the people. People will be slow to notice the many who are jailed or killed because they dare speak against the regime. A dictator will not only put away criminals but also his enemies.

That is a different scenario. Duterte is hard on criminals not against his critics. You cannot be soft on criminals because they do not care about the law. Criminals are repeater doers. They will not stop until they are caught or dead. And if they were given another chance 99% they will do it again. Duterte is not a dictator. I know him being a person from Davao. He personally called the victims to ask what help He can do for them. If he needs to shoulder the expenses of hospital or funeral services he would do so. This is not a lie. That is how Duterte served the people of Davao.

What change, for the worst? All the Filipinos need is a common denominator to unite and joins hands together to move the country forward. What could we expect from your Duterte who doesn’t even speak the national language fluently and even promising the moon and stars because that’s what the people like to hear? Running a country is not a hyperbole and the one to lead must have his/her feet on the ground. Be real and face all the consequences and never brand your style of leadership as it might worked only in the less than 3 percent of your people and will never reach out to 50 percent to gain at least an average working efficiency. And kindly tell him stop patronizing everyone who is known to had sacked the country’s coffer. At the end the question remains, in all these promises made, where will they get the money? Bear in mind “the road to hell is full of good intentions”.
